"I am a Child of God" is one of the songs every LDS
Primary child knows all of the words to. I am a Child of God is
one of the simplest phrases that conveys one of the most important
doctrines of Christanity. How wonderful that for the year 2008
it was chosen to be the Primary theme.
While having a conversation with a Young Woman of another faith,
she asked me,"You don't believe in the Trinity do you?".
Her LDS friends were sitting close to her and hoping that my response
would help them to help her understand the gospel. I told her,"
When I pray to my Heavenly Father, I'm speaking to my Father.
He is just as personal to me as my earthly father, even more so.
I've told my Heavenly Father things in my life that nobody else
knows about me. I really feel like His child." The young
woman nodded in understanding. We spoke for a little longer about
this and a few other things. She could understand everything else,
because she understood she was a child of God.
When I was put in to the Young Women's organization this last
time, the older girls in our ward did not want to be there. After
the first activity, my first counselor came to me and said,"
Well now I remember what the first day of High School was like
when I was a freshman. I'm not in the cool crowd this time either."
Sunday lessons were full of texting and looks of disdain from
our unwilling pupils. But, I could feel the ice melt when we testified
of them being children of our Heavenly Father. The spirit always
seems to acompany the words,"You are a Child of God."
I'm so grateful that message is still being taught every Sunday
to the Nursery children in our ward learning the words when the
"Singing Lady" comes in. It's being taught to them,
the Sunbeams all the way up to the High Priests. May we all remember
not only that we are Children of God, but that the person sitting
next to you is as well.
